QUENTIN JONES

Feeling very inspired and motivated these days. If only there were more hours in a day! (Although i think my lack of sleep is somehow working for me).
I'd like to share a cool video and some work by Quentin Jones that I found via Dazed Digital. Quentin Jones is a fashion illustrator and film maker, she seems to have one of the coolest jobs around, and seems to be quite a cool girl herself. I love the childlike, messy yet polished style of her work. Check out this awesome video by my favourite, Todd Selby:

Check out some of her quirky illustrations:

MODERN RUSTIC

I saw this post on The Selby and while i love almost all of The Selby shoots, I think this one has to be my favourite so far.

As you can see from the "Dream Spaces" section, my favourite home aesthetic is a Rustic/Vintage/Modern vibe. The photos from this shoot are of Hitoshi Uchida-San's home in Kamakura Japan. Hitoshi is an antique furniture company owner as you can tell by all of his beautifully weathered furniture. I love the the extreme rustic look of his place, as it still looks effortless and comfortable and I  love the fact that while all of the pieces are delicate, the home is still playful and kid friendly...gotta love that view also. This is how I want my house to look when I grow up.

Matte Black

I know nothing at all about cars (i barely even drive). However, I have been noticing a few ultra cool looking matte black cars parked around town. The first time i saw one, I immediately thought "Bat Mobile," and while my automotive knowledge is lacking, I do know that a car doesn't get much cooler than the Bat Mobile.

Wild Child

While I'm itching to tell you just how absolutely wonderful the new Florence and the Machine album, "Ceremonials" is, first I`d like to share this pretty little band called Wild Child. I just think they sounds so nice. That is all. (listen to some songs below and click on the picture to listen to their full album "Pillow Talk").

Trinkets

My new bracelet arrived in the mail today from my friend Dana Dallal's jewelery line, Selwyn. Thanks Dana!  I love the fact that she uses actual pieces like hex nuts from the hardware store and then has them gold plated. Click here for my full post about her jewelery line. She has since added some new pieces to her etsy store, so be sure to check it out before they're all gone!

Florence + The Machine - What the Water Gave Me

Florence + the Machine's newest album "Ceremonials" will be released on October 31st. Her last album "Lungs" has gotten some heavy play time on my speakers for the past two years, so I can't wait. Here is the first single off of the new album:

Isak & Inger

Mariel Gonzalez is another example (see the post below about Dana) of one of those super creative and talented people I went to fashion school with. She has created a beautiful line of accessories called Isak and Inger featuring beautiful statment necklaces, sweater knit/leather mittens, hand made bags and more. She uses recycled materials whenever possible. Check out her full product offering here.

SPRING 12 REVIEW NYC: WANG vs ALTUZARRA - Sporty Cool

For some reason the buzz around the Spring '12 New York runways seems to be stronger than ever this year. Feelings of excitement and optimism mixed with strong confidence come to mind after reviewing the shows so far. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the fresh crop of young, energetic designers who were once rookies on the runways are growing into seasoned veterans and really coming into their own.

Listen! Boy & Bear

Boy and Bear formed in 2009 in Sydney Australia. The original plan was for Boy and Bear to be Dave Hosking's solo project, but later became a quintet of singers and songwriters who all originally fronted their own bands.

Selwyn by Dana Dallal

What happens when you go to fashion design school? Well you devote a lot a hours to painstakingly laborious sewing and pattern drafting and you also meet a bunch of ultra creative and talented friends. Dana Dallal is a good friend of mine who I've shared hours of madness with at the Ryerson University sewing labs. She then became a colleague of mine at our first "real job" at a fashion company here in Montreal until she moved on to bigger and better things in London, England. Dana has just launched her own jewlery company "Selwyn" named after one of the founders of the Century Guild of Artists, Selwyn Image. Selwyn was most famously known for his stained glass work but also co-edited the Guild's magazine "Hobby Horse," hailed as the first magazine to be entirely dedicated to design. Dallal wanted to dedicate her line to Selwyn,  whose contributions to the design world is often overlooked by historians.

Listen! Grimes

Grimes aka Claire Boucher is a Vancouver born, Montreal based artist who recently opened for Lykke Li on the Canadian leg of her tour. Grimes is a self taught musician who cannot read music and does not have any background in music theory, however her experimental style that seems to blur the lines between conventional genres has landed her the label of musical virtuoso.

A Song For Today: Dark Dark Dark - Daydreaming

I've had this song on my hype machine playlist for quite a while. Whenever it comes on I'm like "Oh yeah this song! I love this song!" but then I sort of forget about it. Well I thought  it deserved a little time to shine. Definitely check out some other music by Dark Dark Dark as well. I highly recommend the song "In Your Dreams, " its heavy with accordion so its no wonder that I'm a fan.

Bye Bye Bicycle

Well sadly, my lovely (though old and rickety) little fuschia bike was stolen this weekend. Not only am I extremely angry at whoever this thief was, I seemed to have personified my bike and can't help but feel sorry for it all alone out there whereever it may be. It was a small fuschia cruiser, that might have been a teen girl's bike, with a few dents and a very squeeky spring in the seat, but I loved it anyway. In memory of my little bike I have compiled some pretty fashion/bicycle images. Click the link below to see all of the images.

Pop!

When Starbucks started selling their mini desserts including the wondrous Cake Pops, I realized that I had been out of the loop on this whole cake pop phenomenon that seems to have taken over the cupcake craze. I approve of cake pops because they fit with my whole "just for the taste" philosophy. Basically I have a hard time making up my mind when ordering food, so I love it when i get to have a little bit of everything all on one plate, "just for the taste." That's why I'm a huge fan of things like tapas. After learning about the cake pop, I began wondering what other types of dessert pops exist. Well apparently there are all kinds!

Downsizing

Well folks, I've decided that managing two blogswas a little too much for me. While I loved my art and illustration blog, "Sign of the Seahorse," I've decided to stop posting there, and instead add an art+illustration section right here on my main blog. Hope you like it!
(ps my blog is going through some growing pains at the moment, so my appologies if the layout is looking a little wonky)

Dalton Ghetti - Pencil Sculptures

After seeing this on the wonderful blog - Honestly WTF, I just had to repost the pictures. No these aren't giant pencil like sculptures, they are regular sized pencils with detailed micro sculptures carved into them by artist Dalton Ghetti.

Osheaga 2011

I'm currently recovering from a wild weekend of amazing music at the 2011 Osheaga Festival in Montreal. Montreal is full of fun festivals and activities all summer long, but this one is by far my favourite...music & wild outfits, whats not to love? I have to say I'm a little bummed out now that its all over. The festival closed yesterday with an unbelievable psychedelic performance by The Flaming Lips. They truly put on one of the best live performances ever, equipped with wizard of oz characters, an onstage marriage, space bubbles and teletubbies. What I loved most is how positive and fun loving they are. The performance also reminded me of a much smaller scale act I saw at the jazz fest earlier in the month by Halifax's Rich Aucoin. Other highlights for me were a brilliant performance by my favourite band Beirut, Cypress Hill, Ohland, The Tragically Hip, Death From Above 1979, Sia, The Luyas, and Ratatat, to name a few.

The Row Bags

In terms of my decorating style, I've always been more of a maximalist. While minimal home interiors always appeal to me, they just don't work with my messy eclectic style. When it comes to fashion though, I've always dressed more on the minimal side...I have no problem disguising my inner hoarder when it comes to clothes and accessories. This is why i love these bags from The Row so much! The Olsen girls debuted their sleek bag collection at Barney's in New York earlier this month. I have a feeling these "anti-it" bags will ironically make their way to "it" status.

Effortless

I've always had an inclination towards classics in fashion, and nobody pulls off classic looks better than the french. These images evoke that seemingly effortlessly chic look that all Parisienne women seem to have embedded in their genetic make up.

Alright so Cataldo...Sort of sounds like a mix between Death Cab, New Pornographers and Beirut with a little bluegrass thrown in there? Anyway I like it.

Beirut - The Rip Tide Out August 30

My very favourite band Beirut will be releasing their new album "The Rip Tide," on August 30th (just a little after my birthday yay!!). I've heard an early leak and let me just say Brilliant! A lot of the songs have a sort of softer "Nantes" or "Postcards from Italy" vibe to them, which is fine by me. Check out "East Harlem" from the upcoming album (ps im not sure if the video belongs to the band or not, but i like it anyway).
